Focus and Scope

The editors of Revista Colombiana de Ciencias Pecuarias (RCCP) welcome the submission of original manuscripts on experimental and clinical studies associated with the broad areas of animal sciences and veterinary medicine as they interface with biochemistry, molecular biology, physiology, pharmacology, toxicology, pathology, microbiology, parasitology, immunology and epidemiology. The scope of the journal includes studies of basic and applied research in animal management and production, feeding and nutrition, reproduction, breeding, genetics, animal welfare and behavior; as well as animal production focussed from biotechnology, soil science, agrostology, silvopastoral systems, livestock economics and the environment.

The criteria for acceptance of papers submitted for publication are originality, quality and clarity of the content. Each contribution must be based on original, unpublished research that has not been simultaneously submitted to other journals. All papers will be peer reviewed. All authors bear responsibility for ensuring the integrity and quality of their reported research. It is the author's responsibility to secure permission to use figures or tables that have been published elsewhere.

Contributions may be classified as original research, review, rapid communication, clinical case studies or methodological articles, as well as news/commentaries or letters to the editor. Most review articles are invited by the editor. Authors interested in submitting a review article should contact the corresponding editor. Rapid publication of original manuscripts is a goal of the journal. Manuscripts must be written in English. Each manuscript is considered for publication with the understanding that it has not been simultaneously submitted to any other journal. Upon acceptance for publication, papers are subject to editorial review and revision.

Peer Review Process

1. Initial acceptance to start the review process: the section editor reviews the submitted manuscripts. The editor evaluates if the paper fits the scope of RCCP and complies with the journal style and form.

2. Original research and review papers are forwarded to at least three experts in the field to assess its quality, accuracy, and novelty. Most peer reviewers are external to Universidad de Antioquia. They suggest approval, rejection and send back the paper to the editor with recommendations for improvements.

3. Amendments: the editor passes the paper, along with the comments, back to the author for first amendments. Authors should return the amended manuscript to the journal within 30 days. If there are missing amendments, the editor will return again the manuscript to be completed by the authors (second amendments).

4. Anonymity: to ensure impartiality, the review process in RCCP is double blind (the authors do not know the identity of the reviewers, and the authors remain anonymous). All stages of the process are independent and the referees do not consult with each other, nor are they aware of each other’s identity.

Editorial Process

The following are the editorial procedures to which manuscripts are subjected -from submission to non-acceptance, rejection, or publication in the Journal.

Process Description

The following parties are involved in the editorial process: authors, Journal Director, Section Editors (Animal Production, Veterinary Medicine, and Aquaculture), Editorial Committee members, Technical and Support Committee members, as well as reviewers and technical assistants.

  • Manuscripts submitted to RCCP should follow the guidelines provided in the Instructions to Authors link on the Journal website (http://RCCP.udea.edu.co / index. php / OJS / about / submissions # authorGuidelines).
  • Reception and Record of Submission Date. Manuscripts should be submitted electronically to the appropriate Section Editor according to the subject area (Veterinary Medicine: editorveterinary@gmail.com, Animal Production: editoranimalscience@gmail.com or Aquaculture: editoraqua@gmail.com. The manuscript must be accompanied by the Author Agreement (http://RCCP .udea.edu.co/index.php/ojs/about/submissions#authorGuidelines), in which authors accept RCCP's terms and conditions. The corresponding Section Editor receives the manuscript and records the submission date.
  • The Section Editor will determine if the manuscript fits in the scope of the Journal, is adjusted to the journal format, and meets English language standards. If the manuscript is considered irrelevant due to subject, technical, scientific, or language issues, the Section Editor will promptly notify the author of its non-acceptance by the journal.
  • If the manuscript is relevant, the Section Editor will select and contact at least two potential reviewers - experts in the field- and request them to review the manuscript. If English is inadequate the Editor will recommend the author to have it corrected by a professional translator or editor.
  • Scientific Evaluation. Reviewers may be internal (faculty of the University of Antioquia), or external professors or professionals (national or international). Reviewers will anonymously evaluate and provide specific recommendations within two (2) weeks. Upon reviewing their comments, the Section Editor will then decide if the manuscript is fit for publication. If it is not ready, the Editor will communicate the decision to the authors. If the manuscript can be published without changes, the journal assistants will ensure format compliance. If publishable with modifications, authors will be notified of comments or objections and corrections to be made, including formatting corrections. If the author has objections to reviewers comments, he/she will be given the opportunity to justify such objections.
  • Acceptance or Rejection of the Evaluated Manuscript. Should reviewers reach conflicting opinions, the Section Editor will take them into account before deciding to accept or reject the manuscript. The Section Editor may also request the opinion of a third reviewer before making his final decision to accept or reject the manuscript. The author will be rapidly notified of the decision.
  • Corrections. Once the manuscript and suggested corrections have been delivered to the author, the corrected manuscript should be returned to the journal within two (2) weeks. If the author does not return the manuscript with corrections during this period the Journal will assume the author is no longer interested in its publication. Once the corrected manuscript is sent to the journal, the Section Editor and his team will verify that all corrections have been made, including compliance with the standards described in the Instructions to Authors.
  • Copyediting. The editor can recommend changes in wording, semantics, and spelling throughout the manuscript, seeking to improve the quality of the final product.
  • Acceptance Date. Once the Section Editor has confirmed that the manuscript meets all the requirements for publication, he will notify acceptance to the author.
  • Final Review (FR). After acceptance, the journal will conduct a final proofreading to minimize errors.
  • Pre-press. Each issue is shaped by a diagrammer and a member of the Technical Committee. The Director decides the quantity and type of articles that will comprise the issue. The issue is complete when each article has successfully completed all the steps described above.
  • Layout. A professional in the areas of graphic design and editing oversees the layout, aimed at the production of both electronic and printed formats. The document is delivered for a printing proof, considering the final instructions given by the Technical Committee.
  • Proof-print. Support Committee, Technical Committee, Section Editors, and the Journal Director will review the proof provided by the diagrammer. These parties will provide the diagrammer with suggestions and corrections. If necessary, this process can be repeated twice
  • Once the issue is fully corrected, the Section Editor will send a PDF of each article to its corresponding author for final approval and/or suggestions for minor changes. This process should not take more than five (5) days.
  • Print Run and Distribution. Finally, once all parties involved have granted approval, the issue is uploaded to the journal website, printed, and hard copies are distributed.

Conflict of Interest Statement

Potential reviewers may be engaged in competing work that could influence their opinion. To avoid such conflicts of interest, RCCP requires full disclosure of any potential professional and commercial interests before review. Reviewers are forbidden from copying or distributing papers to colleagues. Although RCCP editors take precautions to ensure the fair assessment of manuscripts, RCCP is ultimately not responsible for the conduct of its reviewers.

RCCP welcomes author´s suggestions for suitable, independent reviewers, but editors reserve the right to choose them. RCCP editors will normally honor requests that a paper be withheld from a maximum of two (2) competing groups for review.

Timeline

RCCP makes decisions about submitted papers as quickly as possible. Authors will usually be informed within seven (7) days if the paper has been rejected. Most reviewers honor their agreement with RCCP to deliver a report within two weeks (or other previously arranged time limit). Editors' decisions are routinely made shortly after receiption of all the reviews.

Plagiarism detection

Universidad de Antioquia is a member of CrossCheck by iThenticate. iThenticate is a plagiarism screening service that verifies the originality of content submitted before publication. The iThenticate software checks submissions against millions of published research papers, documents on the web, and other relevant sources. Each manuscript submitted to RCCP will be checked. In this process, iThenticate provides us with a similarity report listing (a) the percentage of similarity resulting from counted words and (b) the markup of the various sections, expressions, or terms which were found in other documents. The decision of whether or not a manuscript should be rejected because of fraud rests with the editor.
